As though being without the Internet or a phoneline at my new place for two weeks wasn't enough, it looks like I'm going to have to wait until next Wednesday. No dice on preying on my unwitting neighbours either, I can pick up five wireless connections at my place and they're all secured.
The Optus man was supposed to come yesterday to do his thing, and he never came. No phonecall, no "sorry", no promise that he'll make it next time. I had to be at home for him too, no exceptions. It's cool because, you know, I can take every day off work. I don't have to be home for the plumber, the electrician or the migration compliance official, why does the Optus man think he's something special? He's not even a real Optus man either, they contract out their connection services.
But wait, it gets better. Because they couldn't make it on the day that they decided on, I had to arrange another day that was a minimum of six business days away because of some stupid policy. They can pick arbitrary days to turn up, whereas I have to wait at the back of the queue like some spoilt toddler because they stuffed up. If I were old I'd write to Choice magazine.
Bytes aren't the only thing that is taking forever to get to me. I bought a heap of couches (the sales guy called it a lounge suite, well la-di-da) when I first moved in. I hate shopping at the best of times, so I picked the biggest and most comfortable one, expecting to take it home with me then and there on the ute I hired. I signed everything and paid a part deposit, the remainder of which I am meant to pay off with some magical credit card that the financing company was supposed to send to me and still hasn't arrived. Apparently I can't have the couch that was in the showroom, mine will arrive in five weeks time. Maybe that's for the best, that couch would have had a highly unknown arseage quotient.
So, no Internet and no couch makes silpheed go something something (edited, thanks djnapkin). Though it's not all bad news. My new place is great, it's close to everything and I don't have to mow the lawn. The fan in the bathroom can't turn off and the communal pool doesn't look big enough for a child to drown in, but I can live with that. I think I'm going to like living here.

lol @ optus
glad to see it isn't just ii that can make customers wait forever for new connections :)

my optus guy never came either. telstra guys come EVERY time. i was way more satisfied with their 'service'.

I agree, telstra came the next day, and gave us dial-up until our modem arrived a week afterward. They must have super staff, in fact, I know they have super staff. I'm doing one of them.
